Die Zeitreisen zum Mitraten beginnen in der römischen Epoche, führen durch Mittelalter und Neuzeit, durch das napoleonische und das preußische Köln, die Jahre der Industrialisierung, des Kaiserreichs, der Weimarer Republik und der NS-Zeit, die Nachkriegsjahrzehnte und enden in den 1990er Jahren. Die unterhaltsame Rätselserie lief zehn Jahre lang als beliebtes "Wochenrätsel" auf der Welle von Radio Köln. Für die Buchversion wurden die Geschichten überarbeitet und ein Register mit den Auflösungen erstellt. Keine der vorliegenden 55 Geschichten ist Teil der beiden anderen Rätselbände "Wer war's? 50 Rätsel-Stories aus der Kölner Stadtgeschichte" und "Es war einmal in Köln. 33 Rätsel-Stories aus der Kölner Stadtgeschichte".
